What is Or Zarua?

A Reconstructionist Havurah Of The East Bay

Founded March 2004

1) What is Reconstructionist Judaism? A progressive, contemporary approach to Jewish life, which integrates a deep respect for traditional Judaism with the insights and ideas of contemporary social, intellectual and spiritual life.

2)
What does Or Zarua mean? Our name literally means "Light sown." It is a phrase taken from the liturgy that was chosen to reflect our connection to traditional texts, the value we place on spreading justice and our energetic spirit. In the past year and a half we have evolved into a community that prays, sings, learns, engages in social action, celebrates, socializes and supports one another.

3)
Who is part of Or Zarua? We strive to be welcoming to both families with children and adults without children, GBLTQI folks and everyone's significant others. As of Rosh Hashanah 5766 (October 2005) we include 17 member households and many friends who join us for services and group activities. We welcome you to come join in.

4)
What do our prayer services look like? Each service is carefully planned with its own leaders and character. While the particular components of any given service are somewhat fluid, there is always an emphasis on singing. We use the Reconstructionist prayer book, Kol Haneshama, and include torah study in each of our Shabbat services. We are trying to balance the needs for both consistency and innovation in our service content and structure. Our children are invited to actively participate in the service and childcare is also available.

5)
What else are we up to? We have celebrated Jewish holidays together, held text study-based discussion groups to inform our decision-making process with regard to communal standards for observance of Jewish laws, we have had a Shabbat camping trip and we have just recently affiliated with the umbrella organization for Reconstructionist congregations.
